Philip Hess Jr., son of John Frederick Hess was a gunsmith. He was the operater of a water-ower
rifle factory situ ated at the foot of the Blue Mountains in 1832. The Hess Gun Factory was
located one mile west of the Old Lehigh Furnace in Heidelberg Township. This factory was enlarged
and improved until it reached the size of 95 feet long by 35 feet wide and employed more than
twenty men. The gun factory operated until 1872, when it was finally sold. |
